Step by Step Instructions for Stop Motion Animation

Team Maunga are a creative class of Year 1 and 2 learners at Ohaeawai School, part of the Kaikohekohe Cluster.  In a previous blogpost on their class blog they have been learning how to create Stop Motion movies with the Stop Motion App for iPads.  On their most recent blogpost, they have put together a movie sharing their step by step instructions for creating a Stop Motion movie.   They have provided other teacher/learners with very clear steps and recorded the scenes to share each step using iMovie.  This is a fantastic example of our youngest learners explaining their learning in a creative way as well as demonstrating the use of Stop Motion animation.  Head on over to their class blog and leave them a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment.

Turning Children's Artwork into a Digital Story

Team Maunga are Year 1 and 2 learners at Ohaeawai School, way up in the Far North, part of the Kaikohekohe cluster.  This blogpost is a great example of how children's artwork can be turned into a digital story that can be shared with a wider audience through their class blog.  There is a clear process from simply using a shared book to then creating their own artwork, based on Dick Frizzell art, to turning it digital with iMovie.  It is great to hear the children's voice recorded and added to their pictures.  Head over to their class blog to listen and leave a comment.

The Gruaffalo - Stop Motion Animation

The Junior Takahe learners at Wesley Primary School have been reading the story of 'The Gruffalo'.  As part of their learning of how to retell stories using describing words, they have created scenes for their Gruffalo story.  They created a diorama as a backdrop for their animation and built their characters with playdough to retell their story in a creative way.  Head on over to their class blog to check out their video clips and hear them retelling the story.   This is a great post to see how our younger learners are creating and sharing in different ways.

Magic School Bikes

Te Maunga are Year 1 and 2 students at Ohaeawai School, part of the Kaikohekohe cluster in Tai Tokerau.  Te Maunga have been very creative with utilising their school bikes as part of a movie to  share their learning around their inquiry topic - Up, Up and Away.  On their class blogpost you can read about their learning process and watch their exciting video clip.  A great example of green screening and movie making to share learning in a different way.

Crazy Critters Alliteration at Ohaeawai School

Team Awa, Year 3 an 4 learners at Ohaeawai School, have been creative with alliteration.  They have been reading a big book 'The Crazy Critters Cooking Convention' which is full of great examples of alliteration.  They have worked collaboratively to create their own alliteration story based on the same theme of critters.  They have used Google Slides to put together their story and then Screencastify to add their voices reading out their story.  Check out both the Year 3 and Year 4 stories on their class blog.  Great examples of collaborative creativity.

Story Telling with Puppet Pal

The year 1 and 2 learners at Ohaeawai School have been working with 2 olders students to create their stories with Puppet Pals.  They have been working hard to increase their reading fluency and to read with expression.  Check out their Puppet Pal stories - Help Me and the Little Red Hen - on their class blog.  A great example for teachers using iPads in their classes to support the Learn, Create, Share pedagogy.

Creating Paper Planes

The Year 1 and 2 students at Ohaeawai School  have been learning all sorts about air pressure.  They have built paper planes to experiment with what happens to it using pressure from different air forces. They have used YouTube video tutorials to follow instructions on how to create a paper plane.  A small group of learners have put together their own video explaining how to make a basic paper plane.  A great example of rewindable learning.  Check out their video on their class blog.  You will read that they have also written step by step instructions as well, meeting the differing needs of different people - some who prefer to follow written instructions, some who prefer a video tutorial.

Tirama Tirama Matariki

Year 1 and 2 students at Ohaeawai School have been learning a new song to help them remember the stars of Matariki, Tirama, Tirama Matariki.  They have put together a video clip to help them learn the actions of the songs.  This is a great way of showcasing rewindable learning.  By creating the video clip and sharing it on their class blog the students, their whānau and the wider community can all learn together.  Our youngest Manaiakalani learners are incredible at sharing their learning in creative ways.

Sharing Learning about Place Value

Israel in a Year 3 learner at Point England School.  Israel and the other learners in Room 14 have been learning about place value - how to expand and contract numbers and how to add numbers using hundreds, tens and ones.  Check out Israel's incredible math learning on his class blog.  +Clarelle Davis , Israel's teacher has kindly shared the template the children have used for their Place Value learning for other teachers to use.  An incredible resource for others.

Rubbish, rubbish everywhere - Bin It by Angelica

Angelica is in Room 14, a year 3/4 class, at Pt England School.  Angelica and her class have been making creative animations about why they need to put their rubbish in the bin.  Angelica is an incredible artist and has used incredible detail in her pictures.  Her movie has been finished by adding her voiceover to explain her thinking.  Check out Angelica's movie on her class blog.  A great example to inspire others to create in different ways.  Make sure you give Angelica a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment and let her know you are sharing her work.

Making Music with Galilee

Galilee learners are Year 4-8 at St Patricks School in Greymouth.  They have been trying out their creative skills through music making and writing lyrics for their songs based around their term theme, Journeys.  They have tried out a variety of apps and have created some awesome songs.  Check out Tom and Brian's songs on their class blog - one created online (using Soundation Studio) and one using a 'traditional' guitar, recorded with Screencastify.

Explaining Rewindable Learning - 'Just do it!'

Damian is a teacher at  Paroa School who has created a short video clip explaining how he goes about creating 'rewindable learning' experiences for his learners.

Madeline Campbell has created these Google Slides that explain the 'why' of rewindable learning as well as step you through the process of the workflow.  

These Google Slides and Damian's short video clip would be beneficial for all teachers, especially those new to the concept of rewindable learning.

Robots and Friendship - Videos to Prompt Writing

Clarelle Davis, a Year 3/4 teacher, at Point England School has been using short video snippets as a strategy to engage her learners in retelling stories in their own words.  The students worked on their stories over a number of days and were able to respond to feedback by adding detail and editing their work.  They also created a picture of their story to share on their blog accompany their writing.  Clarelle's students used Pixlr to create their photos but you could also use Google Drawings if your students are familiar with this tool.

Coding with Scratch Junior

Karen Belt and her year 3 learners at Pt England School have been exploring coding with the Scratch Jnr App on their iPads.  They used Scratch Jnr as a tool to share the stories they had written in a creative way.  The students drew the backgrounds and characters for their stories and set about coding their stories!  Check out their coding and their stories on their class blog.  You can also scroll through their individual blogs to see more of their coding creations.  Great examples of coding with our early learners in an authentic way.  A good post to share with junior teachers utilising iPads to support learning.

Creating Digital Learning Objects - Measurement and Volume

Jessie and Abby are students in Ruma Rua at Kaniere School, part of the Toki Ponamu cluster on the West Coast.  They have been learning about measurement and volume and have created a digital learning object to share their learning with others on their class blog.  This is a great example of sharing math learning in a creative way and would be good to share with both teachers and learners new to a 1-1 learning environment.  This example can support thinking and inspire others as they explore how to be creative in making digital learning objects.

Making Teaching and Learning Visible - An online CV

Clarelle Davis is a beginning teacher at Pt England School.  During 2016 Clarelle has been part of the Manaiakalani Digital Teacher Academy.  As part of finishing the year in the MDTA each participant had the challenge of creating a CV page to share their learning.  Clarelle has created a Google Site to make her year totally visible and accessible to others.  Clarelle has used a very multi-modal approach to share her learning and on her Google Site you can listen to videos of Clarelle introducing herself and sharing her reflections of the year.  You can follow links to both her class blog and her inquiry blog as well as check out the Google Sites she has built to support learning throughout the year.   This 'CV' is a brilliant example to share with all teachers, beginning and experienced, to provide inspiration as they move into a 1-1 digital learning environment and/or continue their journey through the pedagogy of Learn, Create, Share.

Sharing our Values

The Bilingual Unit at Grey Main School recently spent a couple of nights at Takahanga Marae in Kaikoura. The tamariki have created a Google Slide each to share how they showed the values of Maanakitanga, Kotahitanga, Rangatiratanga and Whanaungatanga whilst on the Marae.  These Google Slides have been shared on their class blog.  A great resource to share with others who are going to be spending time on a Marae.  This would also be valuable to share with whānau so they are able to get a sense of the learning for the tamariki while on the Marae.  

Smart Commenting and Replying to Comments

The Year 5 and 6 students at Owairaka District School enjoyed sharing photos from their camp at Chosen Valley on their class blog.  Room 23 are participants of Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu and therefore have a ready and waiting audience for their blogposts.  Their audience (from 3 other Manaiakalani Outreach Schools throughout Aotearoa) focus on providing positive, thoughtful and helpful comments as part of the Manaiakalani Cybersmart Curriculum.  This blogpost is an incredible example of the power of an authentic audience to leave comments and the connections these have made between students.  You will notice the building of relationships through students replying to each others comments.  Head over to their class blog to check out all the comments - last count 29 comments!

Learn, Create, Share in the Digital World

Danni Stone is a Year 7/8 teacher at Glenbrae School.  During 2016, as a beginning teacher Danni has been part of the Manaiakalani Digital Teacher Academy.   Danni's latest blogpost reflects on her first year, both in teaching and in a 1-1 digital learning environment.  Danni has created a video to share her thinking on how she has embedded the Manaiakalani pedagogy into her practice to support the learning.   This video would be a great watch for teachers new to the 1-1 digital learning environment.  Danni's blog is also a good example to show teachers the process of sharing their reflections through the blogging platform.  This video could also be shared with whānau to develop their understanding about how chromebooks support the learning in the classroom.

The Learning Fuel - An Anthem by the Paroa School Learners

Paroa School learners have been working on developing their School anthem 'Paroa School, Paroa School, Paroa School, we've got the learning fuel...' - it's certainly a catchy tune!  Damian McAulay and his Room 7 students have put together the School Anthem video which is shared on their class blog.   This is certainly a great way to share your School Anthem and build an understanding for all students.  I love how it involves so many students sharing their singing, acting and dancing talents in the creation of the video.  A great exemplar of Learn, Create, Share.  You can also check out the day the Anthem was shared live at Assembly on this blogpost.  HUGE credit to the students of Paroa School.
