Creating 'Prove It' Screencastify Videos at Wainui Beach School

Moana Learning Hub are a collaborative learning space, with 54 learners at Wainui Beach School in Gisborne. Koka Ngaire & Matua Fergus are the teachers in this space.  Koka Ngaire has role modelled using Screencastify and shared on their Class Blog to create an exemplar for students using this tool to provide evidence of their maths learning.

On Daniel's individual blog you can see an example of his 'prove it' Screencastify video showing the new math strategy - balance algebra equations to find unknown numbers, stage 7 - he has learnt.  Check out the strategy Daniel has used to get his thinking down pre recording.  Smart thinking!

If you are wanting instructions on how to use the pen tool in Screencastify, this is a good YouTube clip to check out and follow.

Focus on Shapes - Sharing Math Learning

Tane and Blake are year 5/6 learners at Awahono School in Greymouth, part of the Toki Pounmau cluster.  They have been working together to learn about the names of shapes and maths vocabulary around describing shapes.  They have shared their understanding by using Screencastify to record themselves on their chromebook.  This is a very simple but effective way to share learning.  It is a great example to share with teachers/learners new to 1-1 learning environments to show the simple ways students can record and share their learning.  This is perfect evidence of Tane and Blakes understanding of shapes.  Check out their video on Tane's blog.  Remember to leave Tane and Blake a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment.

Creating Maths Games

Layken is a student at Grey Main School, part of the Toki Pounamu cluster on the West Coast.  Layken has been learning about place value and has created a maths game to share his learning.  Check out Layken's game on his individual blog - have a go and putting in the correct and incorrect answers so you can see what happens in each situation.  Don't forget to leave Layken a comment.  A great example of sharing learning in a different way and creating a rewindable resource for other learners to use.

Students Sharing Subtraction Strategies

Room 3 at Wesley Primary School have been using a variety of Google tools to share their maths strategies.  You will see that it has all been put together using a Google Drawing.  If you click on the link on their class blog you will be able to access each group of students Google Drawing.  From here you can check out all their strategies for round and compensating.  They have used Screencastify to create their movies and Google Docs for their reflections.  This is a great template put together by +Phil Margetts that could be used by other teachers to encourage their learners to share their math learning in multi modal/rewindable ways.

Creating Games to Share Math Knowledge

Liam is in a Year 7/8 class at Awahono School, part of our Toko Pounmau cluster on the West Coast.  As part of Liam's maths learning he has been converting analogue, digital and 24 hour time.  Liam has created a game, using Google Slides, for other learners that shows his understanding of the 24 hour time.   This game has inspired many learners, both in their learning about 24 hour time, and also in their desire to create Digital Learning Objects to share their maths knowledge.  A great blogpost to share with learners and teachers.  Check out Liam's game on their class blog and remember to leave him a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment.

Place Value to the Millions

Martin is in the Year 5/6 Mamaku learning environment at Grey Main School, Toki Pounmau cluster.  Martin has used Google Slides to present his understanding of place value to the millions in a creative way.  Head on over to their class blog and meet 'Peashooter' the math tutor who will teach you all about place value.  A great example of a rewindable learning DLO created by a student.  Remember to leave a comment for Martin.

Math Challenge with Tynkercad

Amie is a Year 6 learner from Waikowhai Primary.  In Amie's blogpost she talks about how the senior students from Te Waka Ako have worked together on a math challenge using Tynkerkad.  The challenge involved designing a playground for the juniors.  Amie has reflected on her learning with Tynkercad and created a screencastify for a virtual tour of her playground.   A great example of authentic math learning and working on a real life problem at their school.

Maths meets Minecraft

The innovative learners of Room 22 at Owairaka District School have applied their passion for Minecraft to their maths learning and come out with something absolutely fantastic! Tying the whole concept to the fast approaching whole-school production of "Mindcraft" (no, it's not a typo), students have been investigating the relationships between area and perimeter, wrapped around the creation of 2D Minecraft characters.

As an activity, the learners are hooked. The simplicity of design is complimented by the complexity of the mathematical concepts working alongside this new thinking.

There's a clear focus on operation and breaking the compound shapes into simpler, more manageable chunks.

Head on over to Room 22's class blog to have a look at the huge number of examples on display. Watch this space as students reflect and share their thinking and learning on their own blogs (directly linked on the right hand side).

Don't forget to leave them a comment and start a great conversation!

Sharing Learning about Place Value

Israel in a Year 3 learner at Point England School.  Israel and the other learners in Room 14 have been learning about place value - how to expand and contract numbers and how to add numbers using hundreds, tens and ones.  Check out Israel's incredible math learning on his class blog.  +Clarelle Davis , Israel's teacher has kindly shared the template the children have used for their Place Value learning for other teachers to use.  An incredible resource for others.

Student Sharing Strategies 3.0

Students in Room 3 at Wesley Primary School (Y5/6) have been creating simple, interactive Google drawings to share multiple problem solving strategies. Collaboratively, learners were set the challenge to create a linked Google drawing with instructions and examples of how to solve a problem in maths. They constructed three sets of algorithmic solutions and two place value (chunking) outcomes. Some of the intentions and success criteria were:

-Solve a division problem

-Explain how we solved a problem

-Collaborate with a team

-Everyone has a job

-Everyone understands

-Communicate with a team

-Positive language

-Focused talk

Many groups used screencastify to rewind their learning. Some chose to link to external resources that complimented the problem and aided the solution finding process. Check out the Google drawing via this link and some of the screenshots of learning within this post.

Times Table Song - Learn, Create, Share the 8 x table

Jaydn is a Year 7 student at Point England School.  Jaydn has been learning the 8 x table and has created a song to support their learning.  In Jaydn's blogpost he shares what he has created with Garageband and a microphone...  A great exemplar for other learners and teacher to showcase different ways of presenting learning and another way of creating a rewindable learning experience. True creativity through song.

'Hello this is my song that I have created so if you like songs and you are struggling with some of your times tables like your 8 times tables, then you should listen to this. This song is my 8 times tables song that I created ENJOY.'

Once you have listened to Jaydn's times table song it would be well worth looking at the planning process of his teacher - Rob Wiseman through his Manaiakalani Google Classroom onAir lesson plan.  This link takes you to Rob's detailed planning, a video clip of the lesson, Rob's reflections, the content shared on the class learning site as well as other examples of student learning.

Creating Accessible Links - Visible Teaching and Learning

Sue Glen @ Kumara School has created an innovative way for her learners to share learning with her - the digital hand in folder.  From her class Google Site learners have direct access to their 'File Cabinet'.  The blogger logo takes them straight to their individual blog whilst the folder logo takes them to a Google Spreadsheet.  The Google Spreadsheet gives each learner a sheet to paste in the links to their learning for Sue to access.   Once the students have copied in their link, it is able to be colour coded - red = ready for feedback - orange = feedback received - green = work complete.  This could be a great tip for other teachers who are looking for succinct ways for digital hand in.  Here is the link to a viewable copy of the File Cabinet that can be copied.

Examples of Rewindable Learning

+James Hopkins is the Manaiakalani Outreach Facilitator within the Ako Hiko cluster.  At a recent Leaders Professional Learning Group James has collated examples of Rewindable Learning from teachers.  James has recently added these links within the Ako Hiko Cluster Site.

Math Strategy Challenges

Teachers at Hay Park School have introduced math strategy challenges as part of their learning. The challenge for each student is to choose a math problem from a list and to create a multi-modal presentation about the best maths strategy that could be used to solve the problem.

Game on!

Gargee, Paris and Kanishka are Year 4 students in Setoga Class.  They have used their digital skills to create a game using Google Drawing.  You will see by checking out their game, they have also used their skills in Screencastify to explain the game and their strategy in a visual way.

You can also check out Jay's presentation that he delivered to his class and hear the feedback he was given throughout on his game.  This presentation has been shared on their class blog.

These are great examples of getting creative in math learning in designing high quality digital learning objects to share.

Learning about Direction and Angles through Coding

Room 7 students at Pt England School have been lucky enough to trial Sphero to support their math learning.  They have been learning about directions and angles through coding using an iPad app called 'Lightning Lab.'  Check out the video they have created and shared on their class blog that shows Sphero and their learning in action.  Love the mathematical conversations between students throughout video. A great way to get creative and collaborative with math learning.

Creating Companies @ Lake Brunner School

Over the past two terms, Ruma J at Lake Brunner School have been taking part in the online learning site - Banqer.co - 'Bringing financial education to life in your class.'   As part of this learning they created a class economy.  Each learners had to establish their own companies (individually or collaboratively) that offered a service to the class or school community to earn an income.  Their companies included a variety of services such as cleaning the windows, sweeping stones, headphone cord untangling, collecting sports bins from the playground, as their teacher Sarah said 'you name it, someone does it!'  Sarah went on to explain
Once companies were established we did some learning about the different forms of advertising and the purpose of advertising. We investigated further into logos to find out what made them effective and memorable, learning more about the power of colour etc,  then they created own using whatever tool they wished-digitally or by hand. If you click on each logo it will go to their individual blog where they explain their logo.
Check out their class blog to see the logos they created and and explanation of their logo.

Multi Modal Sites

The Google Drawing below links to a variety of Multi Modal Sites created by innovative teachers within the Manaiakalani cluster of schools.  These sites can be used to inspire teachers and/or can simply be used by teachers as a resource.  The Current Events site, created by Manaiakalani Digital Teacher Academy teachers,
is freely available for colleagues to use. Most pages have the HTML for the page attached at the bottom of the page.

We have offered this so that our colleagues would have a quick way of accessing our content and repurposing for their own teaching.  Help yourself!  If you would like to acknowledge using our material, send a Tweet to @clusternz or comment on our Manaiakalani Google+ Community.

Weather Presenters of Glenbrae

Danni is a Year 7/8 teacher at Glenbrae School and during 2016, part of the Manaiakalani Digital Teachers Academy.  In this blogpost, Danni shares the teaching process she used with her learners enabling them to become 'weather presenters' with the support of Google Maps.  As you will read in Danni's reflection, this was part of a problem solving mathematical investigation into time and temperature.  The digital learning object, a video clip of learners as weather presenters, is a fabulous example of presenting work in a creative way.  Danni's blogpost on her professional learning blog is a clear example of reflecting on teaching and sharing reflections with a wider audience.  A great post to share with teachers and learners to inspire and motivate.
